Facts on the Ground
- In the Head Office you have a LAN and the Branch Office you have a WAN.
- HQ LAN and Branch Office LAN are linked by a WAN.
- WAN Services are usually procured from Service Providers.
- WAN Services can be any of 64kbps, 128kbps, 512kbps, T1 lines, or OC3 etc per link.
Bandwidth for LAN and WAN
The Bandwidth on most LAN is 100 mbps. 100mbps = 100 x 1000kbps = 100,000kbps.
Most WANs operate at 128kbps. A signal travels at 100,000kbps on LAN-side of the Router. Transversing the Router to the WAN-side, it then travels at WAN speed of 128kbps. No doubt, this poses some challenges at the point where LAN and WAN are linked. The WAN optimization solution addresses these challenges.
Other Challenges WAN Optimization Platform Can Address
- Insufficient WAN bandwidth
- Poor application performance to branch offices(e.g., ERP, CRM, email, file sharing, financials, and converged applications such as VoIP and streaming video).
- Slow performance for remote users accessing centralized resources (e.g., centralized Exchange, file, and web servers, etc)
- Poor voice quality or dropped calls on VoIP
- Need visibility into WAN and application performance; lack of troubleshooting and capacity planning tools.
